We love living with our four-legged friends, but oftentimes it means cleaning up after accidents and messes.

Whether you’re dealing with mud and dirt, urine, vomit, or feces, you shouldn’t worry: there are ways to completely clean and restore your carpet back to its previous condition. Even if the mess has been sitting for a while, you can still get your carpets to look brand new again.

When it comes to pet stains, it’s important that you don’t use any harsh chemicals to clean the area; chemical-filled cleaners rarely get the job done. So, what are you supposed to do instead? Here, we’re sharing our guide to pet stain removal that’s simple, efficient, and effective. Just keep on reading to learn more!

What to Do First

So, you’ve either smelled or seen a mess made by your pet. It’s crucial that you take immediate action to prevent any further settling or soaking, so here’s what to do first!

  1. If you’re dealing with feces or vomit, pick up the mess with a plastic bag. Be careful as to not push any more of the accident into the fibers of the carpet.
  2. Blot the stain with paper towels. Press down gently, but don’t scrub. You’ll notice the mess start to lift off of the carpet and soak into the paper towels. Repeat this a few more times with new paper towels.
  3. Lastly, place down a final paper towel over the stain. Stand on the paper towel (make sure you’re wearing shoes) and let the pressure soak up the last bit of mess.

When you’re finished, remove all of the paper towels and toss them into the trash. Now, you’re ready to clean the mess with cleaning products.

Cleaning the Mess Yourself

It’s time to get to work!

Grab your favorite carpet cleaning product and spritz it directly onto the stain. Be sure to use a liberal amount so that the product can soak into the carpet and attack the stain and bacteria.

Then, use a soft-bristled brush to work the product deeper into the stain. After a few minutes, use paper towels to blot the stained area dry, and then leave the carpet alone so that it can dry as well.
